Event information
Cooperation event with the vhs Bochum and the Kulturzentrum Bahnhof Langendreer.
Over five days, we will deal with the topics of climate crisis, climate protection and climate communication from different perspectives with a focus on urban space. Together, we want to identify and develop democratic options for action in our environment.
In scientific sessions with experts from Bochum’s universities and practice-oriented workshops, you will acquire multifaceted specialist knowledge on climate change as well as methodological skills in the areas of communication, argumentation and debating.
How can Bochum’s districts be planned sustainably? How are marginalized communities in Bochum already experiencing urban heat waves? How can cities protect themselves from future extreme weather events? Why is non-violent communication important in climate debates? At the end of the Summer School, we encourage you to apply and represent your acquired knowledge in your own civic engagement!

Communication and cooperation
Introduction: Getting to know each other, principles, aims of the summer school
With Sabela Losada Barros (Bahnhof Langendreer) & Astrid Thews (vhs Bochum)
On the first day of the summer school, we will focus on the common thread of our week together, your motivations and learning goals. An essential aspect of democratic debate culture is communication in its various facets. We will look at and reflect on different models. In order to become a learning group for the week, we will practice cooperation.

Climate change and technology
Science: 2045 – Paths to climate neutrality in the Ruhr region
With Dr. Alexander Heim (Fraunhofer IEG)
Germany is to become net climate neutral by 2045. But how will the sustainable energy systems of the future look like? Which technologies will we be using in 2045? And what regional characteristics does the Ruhr region, for example, have to offer? After an introduction, various options will be discussed and categorized using specific examples.
Science: Smart cities – How AI can protect us from climate-related extreme weather
With Anika Hotzel (Hochschule Bochum)
Extreme weather events, such as climate-related flooding, pose major challenges for cities. How can AI help to meet these challenges? How can smart monitoring systems provide early warnings of dangers? After a thematic introduction, the participants themselves will develop solutions for climate-related challenges in the Ruhr metropolis with the help of practical instructions based on AI and data analysis.
Discussion practice: non-violent communication
With Danny Friedrich (freelance trainer)

Climate change and migration
Science: Heat, poverty and health – community research for more resilient neighborhoods
With Prof. Dr. Christiane Falge & 2-3 district researchers (Hochschule für Gesundheit)
Climate-related extreme weather conditions exacerbate global and regional health inequalities, especially for older people, people living alone, people with (chronic) pre-existing conditions and marginalized communities in general. How can community research contribute to increasing climate-related health literacy? How can it improve health-promoting behaviors among residents in the climate disaster? The workshop invites you to discuss methods of climate adaptation through community research with the Bochum district researchers.
Science: When home disappears – The status of climate refugees under international law
With Maren Solmecke (scholarship holder of the Joachim-Herz-Promotionskollegs für Recht und Transformation)
In 2022, around 32.6 million people had to leave their homes due to the effects of the climate crisis. Nevertheless, the consequences of the climate crisis are not a recognized reason for flight under the Geneva Refugee Convention. The seminar deals with the status of climate refugees under international law and possible concepts for adequately recording climate-related refugee movements in the future. Particular attention will be paid to the question of what happens to states that are threatened with the complete destruction of their territory due to rising sea levels.
Discussion practice: argumentation training
With Felix Koblenzer (freelance trainer)
Thursday, 19.09.2024
Climate change and mobility
Science: Street space in focus – How we can help shape our city through active mobility
With Franca Hollmann & Lili Depka (Hochschule Bochum)
Mobility – an everyday topic. How do you get around in everyday life? After a brief introduction to the basic concepts, we want to discuss with you what the mobility and street space of the future could look like, what the obstacles are and what each individual can do for the mobility transition.
Science: Sustainable mobility for all – taking into account the needs of people with disabilities
With Prof. Dr. Kathrin Römisch ((Evangelische Hochschule Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe)
While sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important and measures such as the expansion of public transport, bicycle-friendliness and the promotion of car-free areas are being promoted, the needs of disabled people are often not taken into account. The seminar will identify barriers and discuss measures to promote inclusive mobility.
Debating practice: Debating in the Fish Bowl
With Sherin El Safty (UniverCity Bochum)
Friday, 20.09.2024
Climate protection and implementation
Science: Sustainability in urban areas – the role of ecologically sustainable new-build districts
With Abeer Janes (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)
Climate change, shortage of natural resources, loss of biodiversity: In view of the multiple challenges and crisis situations, the promotion of sustainable development of and by cities and their neighborhoods is more urgent than ever. Possible approaches include ecologically sustainable new-build neighborhoods. But what characterizes ecologically sustainable neighborhoods? How is ecological sustainability implemented in neighborhoods? What challenges stand in the way of implementation? These and other questions will be addressed in the lecture and discussed together with the participants.
Discussion practice: Bochum climate initiatives in the World Café!
