Speaker: Prof. Dr. Heike Köckler, Professor of Social Space and Health, Department of Health Sciences, Bochum University of Applied Sciences
Fear is a feeling we all know. Sometimes it causes us to avoid certain routes or places – even if the perceived and actual levels of insecurity do not always match. How can so-called “fear spaces” be made more accessible and thus safer? This is precisely what the Lab for Digital Participatory Social Space Analysis (DiPS_Lab) at Bochum University of Applied Sciences wants to find out with various online surveys.
While a Bochum-wide survey asked about fear of crime in residential areas, another survey focused on areas of fear on the university campus. The presentation provides insight into the survey methods, key findings, and possible measures to improve the situation.
Knowledge roundtable on security: Public, private, digital—how (un)secure are we really?
The event is part of our Knowledge Roundtable series. In collaboration with vhs Bochum and Bochum City Library, we invite experts (almost) every month to shed light on the current annual theme of the House of Knowledge from different perspectives and disciplines. In 2025, this theme is: Security! Whether pandemics, resource shortages, climate events, data theft, or geopolitical conflicts—they all influence our sense of security. That is why we are asking ourselves the following question in the 2025 Knowledge Roundtable: Public, private, digital—how (un)safe are we really?
