Digital Utopias –
how can we reclaim TikTok and other platforms for solidarity and justice?

TikTok is more than just singing and dancing. Many people use it to stay informed about politics and society and to connect with others. Young people, in particular, use platforms like TikTok to talk about feminism, racism, queer life, and social injustice, and to support one another.

Media scholar Julia Bee explains how social media is changing the way we view the world and why platforms like TikTok often lack transparency and, above all, are driven by profit. At the same time, we’d like to discuss together how we can use TikTok and similar platforms in a fairer, more creative, and more democratic way. After all, social media can also give rise to entirely new forms of community and solidarity.

This event is part of the lecture series “Wissensrunde Utopien” (Knowledge Roundtable Utopias) organized by vhs, the city library, and UniverCity Bochum e.V. on the way to the House of Knowledge. The event will be conducted in German.
